Institute for
Peripatetic Studies

Collegium Itinerantium

“Solvitur Ambulando”

It is solved by walking.

Mission

The Institute for Peripatetic Studies advances Peripatetics — the interdisciplinary study of place through movement. We hold that wandering, observation, and direct engagement with landscapes produce a form of knowledge that no desk can replicate, and that not every worthy journey requires a destination to justify itself.

A Welcome from the Director

The Institute for Peripatetic Studies arose from a recognition that moving through the world teaches things that remaining in one place cannot. A landscape encountered on foot is a different object of study than a landscape described in a text or observed from a window. The path itself is a kind of argument.

This institution exists to take that argument seriously — with appropriate ceremony. It is devoted to the study of places, journeys, and the knowledge that emerges from direct engagement with the world. Its methods include walking, observation, conversation, and honest curiosity. Its guiding motto, Solvitur Ambulando, is both its program and its answer to most objections.

You are welcome here, whatever road brought you.
